Image Essay #10
This is a photo mosaic created by SungJoon Hur. The smaller images are of various animals and plants in their surroundings. The outer image is of a parrot. I chose this piece as a representation of closure. Closure is one of the six principles of Gestalt. The definition of closure refers to the mind’s ability to connect fragmented parts and make them into a complete form. Photo mosaics play on this ability by using many small, fragmented pieces to make up a larger, more descriptive picture. This technique of closure is used in this picture by the smaller images of animals and plants used to create the larger picture of a parrot in our minds. The picture also has an analogous color scheme to it. An analogous color scheme is one that contains several colors close together on the color wheel. These colors of the picture would be the yellow, green, and blue. Yellow, green, and blue are three colors close together on the color wheel. The black and white are then accents to the picture of the parrot. The colors also provide us with a tropical, relaxing feel because that is how our society interprets the blue and green colors.
