Image Essay #7

This is a photograph I found online. The photograph is of numerous green apples that are lined up in perfect rows and columns. The apples have sticks placed in them as if they were ready to be dipped in caramel and covered in nuts. The reason I chose this picture is to provide an example of one of the principles of Gestalt. The main principle shown in this picture is repetition. The apples are all the same and aligned symmetrically. As you can see, this piece of artwork is a great example of the principle of Gestalt- repetition. The apples are repeated but then the pattern of the apples is also broken.

What makes this piece most interesting is the break in the pattern. The break happens in the second row where one apple has no stick, and in the front row where the apples have no sticks and then there is an empty space on the end where an apple should be. This lack of complete repetition keeps our eye involved and interested in the artwork rather than just looking past it. The lack of repetition also breaks the symmetry of the photograph to allow for a more interesting composition.
